On February 15th, Old Fort Niagara takes visitors back to the 18th century, when the historic site presents a special event entitled The Winter Warriors. Reenactors will present living history activities that illustrate how soldiers and civilians survived winter weather during the colonial period. Programs include musket firings, tactical demonstrations, period cooking, fire starting, shelter building, snowshoeing (weather permitting) and winter clothing.

What did it take to survive a brutal winter at Fort Niagara 300 years ago?

On Saturday, February 15, from 10 am to 4 pm, Old Fort Niagara invites you to experience the challenges and resilience of winter life in the 18th century at Winter Warriors.

Explore how soldiers and civilians survived the harsh realities of winter in colonial times through engaging demonstrations and interactive programs.

Highlights include:

  • Musket Firings and Tactical Drills: Witness the precision and skill required for battle, even in freezing conditions.
  • Fire Starting and Shelter Building: Learn the essential techniques for creating warmth and protection in the wilderness.
  • Period Cooking: See how hearty meals were prepared to sustain garrisons through long, cold days.
  • Winter Clothing Displays: Discover the garments that provided crucial protection from the elements.
  • Snowshoeing: (Weather permitting) Take part in this timeless method of winter travel.

Warm up by the fire in the French Castle and experience the unique atmosphere of the Fort during the winter season. It’s an opportunity to connect with history in a way you’ve never imagined.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Old Fort Niagara Association members can enjoy this event for free!
