All Aboard for TYKEs' Last Stop on Market Street
TYKEs (Theatre Young Kids Enjoy) continues its 17th live-on-stage season with Last Stop on Market Street, opening April 2. Ideal for kids ages five and up, TYKEs’ production is performed by a BIPOC cast. The book that inspired this theatrical production won the prestigious 2016 Newbery Medal, a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, and a Caldecott Honor.
Performances take place at the JCC Hart Theater, 1200 Edgewood Avenue in Brighton on:
Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Sunday, April 10 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $20 ($18 for JCC members) and are available at tykestheatre.org.
Original artwork for the set background is hand-created by visual artist Cheyenne Bailey and projected onto the stage for a unique artistic look that reflects the book’s illustration style. Bailey’s images are accompanied by a rolling 14-foot-long bus built especially for the show.
The story centers around young CJ, who visits his grandmother in a community considerably different from his own affluent, sheltered upbringing. A series of enlightening encounters with members of Nana’s community helps him unplug from his electronics and view the world from a more open-minded perspective, noticing and appreciating the beauty around him. The show addresses timely themes of generosity, acceptance and gratitude in an accessible, gentle way that's infused with plenty of humor, dancing and singing.
The high-energy Broadway-caliber score is performed by TYKEs’ longtime music director Jim Schmitt. TYKEs’ production showcases a cast of six local adult professional actors, directed and choreographed by local theatre maven Esther Winter. Hector Manuel plays the lead character CJ and also serves as the show’s assistant choreographer, performing alongside beloved actor Annette Ramos as Nana. Cast members Tracy Chang, Kyra Green, Jade Hill and Jalen Taylor portray all of the remaining roles.
Last Stop on Market Street is sponsored by a grant from Humanities New York and Wegmans.
TYKEs’ founder Freyda Schneider explains, “Something we always strive for at TYKEs’ shows is for adults to enjoy the performance as much as children. This particular show especially exemplifies that. The script is so exceptionally well-written and the messages of benevolence are so salient and important that I guarantee this show will resonate with audience members – adults and children alike. Plus the music is so full of energy, I dare you to try to hold still!”
Covid protocols remain in place, requiring masks for all attendees aged two and up regardless of vaccination status. For adults and children aged 12+, proof of vaccine or proof of negative Covid test within 24 hours of show time is required and will be checked at the door. The JCC is equipped with a MERV 13 air filter, which replaces all the indoor air every 15 minutes.
TYKEs consistently ranks as the #1 Children’s Theatre Company in Rochester by KidsOutandAbout.com, and one of the top places in all of Rochester to bring kids – for the 11th consecutive year. For a complete listing of Covid protocols and all show dates and times, visit tykestheatre.org.
