Rhythm, music, and rhyme are everywhere: in songs, on stages, stuck in our heads, even in the flow of everyday conversation. This camp will celebrate the music of language and the language of music, from the flow of dialogue in improvisational theater to the rhythms and texts of music. In the morning, students will play language-based improv games and explore collaborative poem-making with a playwright. In the afternoon, students will learn rhythm notation, listen to and play music, and improvise sound environments for their original writing with a professional cellist. Musicians of all kinds are welcome and encouraged to bring their own instruments, but no musical background is required. All you need is a love of words and sound, and a willingness to play. The week will culminate in a showcase of an original musical and spoken word performance.!
Teaching Artist(s): Esther Rogers Baker and Katherine Varga
