We offer youth and adult sailing programs on Irondequoit Bay that make learning to sail accessible, safe, and genuinely fun. Our certified instructors create a supportive, hands-on environment where students learn the fundamentals of sailing, safety, and seamanship while building confidence and connection on the water. Group classes run from late June through July, with private and small-group sessions available throughout the summer. Whether you’re completely new to sailing or looking to grow your skills, we’ll help you discover what makes sailing so rewarding.

Sailing Class Descriptions

Youth Beginner

A fun introduction to sailing for kids ages 8–17. Students learn basic sailing skills including rigging, steering, tacking, gybing, and understanding the wind. Lessons include games, teamwork, and capsize recovery in a safe, supportive environment.


Youth Intermediate (Youth/Adult Intermediate)

Designed for sailors who already know the basics and can steer and control their boats. This class builds independence and introduces more advanced concepts and boat handling. Students gain confidence sailing solo and further develop the principles of upwind and downwind sailing.


Bridge to Racing (Youth/Adult Bridge to Racing)

For experienced sailors ready to try sailboat racing in a fun, low-pressure setting. Students learn about racecourses, basic rules, teamwork, and strategy before heading out to practice and run short, friendly races on the bay.


Race Clinic (Youth/Adult Race Clinic)

This advanced class is for sailors looking to improve racing performance. It focuses on boat speed, mark rounding, and tactical decision-making, with coaching both on and off the water.


Sailing Counselor in Training (Ages 14–16)

A leadership program for teens interested in becoming junior instructors. Participants work alongside staff to learn teaching techniques, communication, safety, and leadership skills. Some may earn certifications such as first aid or boating safety.

Adult Beginner

Perfect for anyone new to sailing or returning after a long break. You’ll learn the fundamentals of boat handling, steering, sail control, tacking, gybing, and safety procedures. Classes are taught on stable, responsive boats like the Sunfish and JY15.

Adult Intermediate (Youth/Adult Intermediate)

For sailors who already know the basics and want to take the next step. You’ll build solo sailing confidence, practice maneuvering in different wind conditions, and explore more advanced topics like sail trim, balance, and weather awareness.

Bridge to Racing (Youth/Adult Bridge to Racing)

This course introduces the excitement of sailboat racing in a relaxed, supportive setting. You’ll learn the essentials of race rules, strategy and boat speed, then put your skills to the test in short practice races on Irondequoit Bay.

Race Clinic (Youth/Adult Race Clinic)

Designed for sailors eager to push their performance further. Learn how to start fast, round marks efficiently, and fine-tune your sail trim for speed. We’ll cover race tactics and decision-making, with on-the-water coaching to help you level up your racing skills.
