Raise the Barre is proud to be offering our popular Puppetry Camp online this year!

Campers (age 10-16) will learn virtually everything about bringing your characters to life. I mean, we’ll really zoom in to what makes a puppet performance great. ;D

In this camp we will practice the basic skills of puppetry in a whole new way – for the camera! Any level of experience is welcome. Beginners will learn the basics of how to make their characters look alive, while experienced puppeteers will be able to continue honing their skills to mastery, and familiarize themselves with how to work in this new performance space.

Requirements:

  • Access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet connection
  • Video camera (most likely built into your device).
  • Microphone (most likely built into your device).
  • A puppet – For this camp, everyone will need a puppet that can lip sync, which means it must have a mouth that can open and close. If you don’t own a puppet already, you can make or purchase one. On the first day of camp, the director will teach everyone how to make a puppet out of a piece of paper that they can use to practice. If you prefer to make something in advance, or purchase a puppet, here are some recommendations:

Melissa and Doug series of puppets, which average about $17 on Amazon. I highly recommend these as a quality product at an affordable price. They are easy to use and include a removable rod for advanced puppetry skills. Please make sure you do not get a “hand puppet.” These do not have mouths that open and close. Links available on our Resources Page.

A good old fashioned homemade sock puppet. Find a sock around the house and glue (or draw) on some eyes. If you want to have a little more fun with it, use felt, yarn, or ribbon to add hair or other features.

If you have any questions about the camp, please contact Raise the Barre via email at info@raisethebarre.com and we will be happy to help!
