David Hochstein’s musical talent and passion inspired the founding of the Hochstein School of Music & Dance; but before he became a recognized soloist, he was a young music student struggling to find resources for his musical education. The recognition of important patrons like Emily Sibley Watson helped Hochstein to take the next steps in his musical career, and in the spirit of just this kind of recognition, Hochstein supports students through our excellent instruction as well as through our tuition assistance program.
In 1991, Hochstein began an initiative to celebrate and encourage outstanding talent and achievement among the young musicians in our community. The David Hochstein Recital Competition invites upper-level High School instrumentalists of the greater Rochester area to share their talent and skill. This demanding competition asks young pianists, string players, woodwind, brass, percussion, harp, and guitar players to demonstrate flexible musicality by performing music in contrasting styles. Winning performers are awarded a cash prize and invited to perform in a concert in the Hochstein Performance Hall to be broadcast on WXXI-FM Classical 91.5.
The David Hochstein Recital Competition celebrates another facet of Hochstein’s legacy: his extraordinary level of virtuosity at a young age. Although Hochstein’s career was cut short by his death in WWII, the Hochstein School has continued for more than 95 years to celebrate young people who, like Hochstein, demonstrate exceptional musicianship. We honor these young musicians and are proud to invite any eligible performers to enter the 2016 competition.
