Kick off the holiday season at GCV&M!
Get into the holiday spirit when you visit Genesee Country Village & Museum on Saturday, November 16, and Sunday, November 17, our annual Holiday Market & Preparing for Winter in the Historic Village! Prepare for winter yourself by shopping the Holiday Market, and see how Western New Yorkers prepared for winter in the 19th century. The perfect family activity to kick off the holiday season!
Stroll through the Historic Village where preparations are underway for the snowy season ahead. From preserving food to preparing warm garments, there’s much to be done around the Historic Village this November. Smell the aromas of bacon and sausage smoking in the Smoke House, explore fence building and winter work at the Early Settlement Farm, stop by Jones Farm Kitchen to learn about sausage-making, stop by the Livingston-Backus House to explore 19th-century Thanksgiving traditions (and head into the front part of the house to learn about winter on the Erie Canal), see the completion of a wool silk quilt in the Eastman Boyhood Home, explore lard rendering outside of Hetchler House, check out soap making in Thomson Tavern, learn about 19th-century winter travel in the Altay General Store, visit MacKay House to try your hand at candle-dipping, and so much more.
Shop hand-crafted and locally-produced goods at our Holiday Market. From a multitude of art, food, and gift vendors representing the very best from Western New York, and just in time for seasonal gift-giving! Visitors can peruse unique gift items and village-made goods in the Flint Hill Store.
Attend a talk: "Red Hot Woolens" (Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Gallery)
Join curator Brandon W. Brooks in the John L. Wehle Gallery lobby for a fascinating exploration of how 19th-century New Yorkers stayed warm in the bitter cold of winter. See historical examples of winter clothing and explore all the ways a 19th-century individual would have clothed themselves in preparation for cold weather!
Find a number of adorable seasonal sets to take a winter family photo as you explore the Historic Village! This year visitors will enjoy seasonal selfie stations at the Post Office and the Law Office.
Stop by Hosmer’s Taproom to warm up with a hand pie and a warm beverage, shop historical treats and baked goods in the D.B. Munger & Co. Confectionery, and find delicious specials in our bar and restaurant locations!
We’re excited to be collecting Thanksgiving-themed non-perishables for families in need in our community!
When you join us for Holiday Market & Preparing for Winter, please plan to bring one or two non-perishable food items to help contribute to a local family’s Thanksgiving Dinner. (Think, gravy, cranberry sauce, corn, beans, etc.!) We’ll be collecting the non-perishable donations in large bins in our Admissions Tunnel and will deliver your generous donations directory to Cameron Community for distribution in our communities. Thank you!
