For the second year in a row, Pittsford CommUNITY is sponsoring the MLK: Living the Dream event series in Pittsford during the month of January. The theme for 2024’s series is “Building a Coalition of Love,” and the events will highlight some of the work in our community that embodies the spirit of Dr. King and move us closer to achieving his dream. All events will take place at the United Church of Pittsford, 123 S. Main St.
Wednesday, January 10th, 7 pm - Actions of Love
Panel Discussion on Issues of Inequity
Panel discussion will include representatives from the following organizations: Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative (RMAPI), ACT Rochester, Poor People's Campaign, Rochester Area Community Foundation, and the United Way of Rochester and the Finger Lakes. Panelists will share efforts of their agencies and ideas of how to engage as community members to address poverty and housing needs.
Wednesday, January 17th, 7 pm - Love through the Arts
Spoken Word Performance by Shanterra Mitchum & Community Poetry Slam
Modern spoken word can be traced back to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s, the American beat poets of the 1950s, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Shanterra Mitchum, Program Director of the Center for Teen Empowerment Rochester, will perform works inspired by Dr. King. Additionally, there will be an open platform for community members of all ages to use their artistry and voices to encourage, to heal, and to connect.
Wednesday, January 24th, 7 pm - Love Our Children
Youth Ambassadors from Levine Center to End Hate
Monica Gebell, Executive Director, will share about the Levine Center to End Hate, and Thomas Cuyler, Youth Engagement Coordinator, will facilitate a discussion with the Youth Ambassadors, high school students from the greater Rochester area.
Sunday, January 28th, 3 pm - Love Our Neighbors
Interfaith Family Service
Hosted by the United Church of Pittsford under the leadership of Reverend Julius “JD” Jackson, Jr. and inspired by Dr. King’s interfaith advocacy and action, members from multiple congregations will come together for music, words, and inspiration.
