Visiting Roger Williams National Park in Providence, Rhode Island
By Meg Brunson
It was not until we started researching Rhode Island that we discovered the history of Providence, and then realized that we absolutely had to visit Roger Williams National Park. Rhode Islans was originally founded in the early 1600s as a place free of religious persecution for those fleeing from Puritan, Massachusetts.
The park and visitor center were small, yet easily accessible with parking avalable on site. The rangers on-duty were really great and when our kids finished their Junior Ranger's books, they were awarded the pins that they expected, but also certificates with their names written beautifully in calligraphy. It was a small visitor center, but the movie was informative, and the interactive displays were great.
We decided to take a short walk up to Prospect Terrace Park where we could see a statue of Roger Williams and also breathtaking views of the city of Providence. One thing we were NOT prepared for were the extreme hills. The uphill trek was so intense we almost gave up half-way up! And walking down was almost just as difficult as we had to keep ourselves grounded. In hind-sight I probably would have avoided this part of the trip all together given my kids' ages and my bad knees... but we did get a good pic of the city from the beautiful vantage point!
We loved the park and it's focus on individuality, freedom, and acceptance! Start planning your trip at https://www.nps.gov/rowi/index.htm
