Ganondagan Winter Break Family Days

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 02/21/2016
For 6 days during February break, Haudenosaunee culture comes to life through a variety of hands-on activities—different each day. Each day features a themed storytelling event with related craft activities. Only at Ganondagan!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

You're in luck! Here are SIX DAYS worth of family activities not only to keep small hands busy, but also to learn about Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) life, culture, and crafts. Then, experience our hands-on exhibits at the Seneca Art & Culture Center including our interactive Seneca Bark Longhouse replica, and take a brisk walk on our nature filled site.

February 16, "Our Winged Friends": Join us for an afternoon of educational fun. Listen to traditional Seneca and Haudenosaunee bird stories, then make a winter bird feeder for our fine, feathered friends. All ages with adult supervision.

February 17, "Our Winged Friends, Too": Ever wondered about winter bird habitats? Learn about Ganondagan's rare bird habitat and the vital role it plays in our environment and have some fun by making Eco-friendly Curly Birds! For ages 6+ with adult supervision.

February 18, "Seneca Clay Pots": Preview the animated Seneca Creation Story film and hear a more detailed explanation of how earthen clay played a role in the story of creation. Then learn how to fashion a traditional Seneca style pot and use wood and bone tools to decorate them in traditional Seneca designs. Recommended for ages 7+ with adult supervision. This program will be offered 11 am, 12:00 pm and 1 pm.

February 19, "Hunters and Hunting": Recommended for ages 7+ with adult supervision (pre-knowledge of knot-tying a plus). This program will take place at 11 am, 12:00 pm and 1 pm. This one-hour program combines traditional storytelling elements with traditional crafts. Hear Native American stories related to hunting and then build a miniature ash bow that shoots cotton swabs, and ash splint animal target.

February 20, "Animal Teachings": Love animals? Join us for a full day of fun and learning featuring traditional Seneca and Haudenosaunee Animal Teachings. Beginning at 11 am, hear turtle stories, create a turtle puppet and color a traditional Haudenosaunee turtle back calendar. Activities and stories run from 11 am - 2pm. Then for an extra special treat, hear traditional rabbit stories in our auditorium and then get your feet moving and experience the Iroquois Rabbit Dance. For all ages with adult supervision.

February 21, "Look to the Stars": Join us to hear traditional Seneca and Haudenosaunee Star Stories and have some fun creating your own star wind catcher to hang in your room or by a window. Recommended for ages 6+ with adult supervision.
