In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short.
