Virtual Event: Drag Queen Story Time with Akasha L. Van Cartier and Leia Way LeStat - Kelly Strayhorn Theater

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 12/12/2020
On Saturday, December 12, at 3:00pm on Youtube, get ready for Drag Queen Story Time! Pay What Makes You Happy! Drag Queen Story Time is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children! KST is thrilled to present a 3 episode short series, Drag Queen Story Time with Pittsburgh’s own twenty-one year drag veteran and pageant winner Akasha L. Van Cartier! Each story time, Akasha will be joined by current reigning Miss P-Town Leia Way LeStat to share two stories along with songs and dances to engage your child. Drag Queen Story Time captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real. Run time: approx. 20min.

Nana Akua Goes to School By Tricia Elam Walker with illustrations by April Harrison

Speak Up By Miranda Paul with illustrations by Ebony Glenn.

About the Books:

Nan Akua Goes to School: In this moving story that celebrates cultural diversity, a shy girl brings her West African grandmother–whose face bears traditional tribal markings–to meet her classmates. This is a perfect read for back to school–no matter what that looks like!

It is Grandparents Day at Zura’s elementary school, and the students are excited to introduce their grandparents and share what makes them special. Aleja’s grandfather is a fisherman. Bisou’s grandmother is a dentist. But Zura’s Nana, who is her favorite person in the world, looks a little different from other grandmas. Nana Akua was raised in Ghana, and, following an old West African tradition, has tribal markings on her face. Worried that her classmates will be scared of Nana–or worse, make fun of her–Zura is hesitant to bring her to school. Nana Akua knows what to do, though. With a quilt of traditional African symbols and a bit of face paint, Nana Akua is able to explain what makes her special, and to make all of Zura’s classmates feel special, too.

No Voice Too Small: When something really matters, one voice can make a difference. This spirited, vibrant picture book celebrates diversity and encourages kids to speak up, unite with others, and take action when they see something that needs to be fixed.

Join a diverse group of kids on a busy school day as they discover so many different ways to speak up and make their voices heard! From shouting out gratitude for a special treat to challenging a rule that isn’t fair, these young students show that simple, everyday actions can help people and make the world a better place.

Drag Queen Story Time is based on Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) which was created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions, under the leadership of Juli Delgado Lopera and Virgie Tovar, in San Francisco in 2015. It started out as drag queens reading stories to children in libraries and grew into a global phenomenon! DQSH now offers literary and creative programming for kids and teens of all ages led by drag queens, kings, and creatures all over the world. DQSH is a global network of local organizations, each of which is independently managed and funded.
