Class Descriptions:

Firebuilding: Purpose & Function 101 / Thursday, January 20th, 3:30 - 5:15pm - Come join us for a deep dive into the art of firebuilding. From spark to success, we will embark on a journey that shows both the purpose and function of practical firebuilding. You will have opportunities for skill practice; including significant hands-on work in learning how to split wood, using flint and steel, building proper fire structures and maintaining fire for cooking purposes. Near the end of class, we will learn the science and history of cooking over the open flame while listening to a local legend.

Wildlife Tracking & Forest Games / Thursday January 27th, 3:30-5:15 PM - In the heart of winter, much can be seen, heard and searched for. Come join this class for a crash course in tracking skills. From the whitetail deer, to the eastern grey squirrel; you will be taught natural awareness skills that will increase your animal tracking abilities. Much of this class will be spent identifying clues, following tracks and understanding habitats as a whole. We will leave time for a few additional activities in the forest if time permits!

Winter Wildlife: Taking a Deeper Dive / Thursday, February 10th, 3:30-5:15 PM - Have you ever wondered where all the animals seem to go when the temperature plummets and wind blows over us? This class will expand your knowledge of animals tendencies, patterns and behavior during the winter. In addition to tracking, we will take a deeper dive into the mind of a few animals that can be found at the nature center. Please join us in examining exactly how animals behave during our winters!

Fire Building Challenge: From Spark to Success / Thursday February 17th, 3:30-5:15 PM - Do you have what it takes to create and sustain fire for hours? This class is designed to challenge you to use the knowledge and skills of firebuilding to work together in creating and sustaining a fire for the duration of class. We will begin class with a quick review of the fire process, and from that point, we will take a supportive approach. You will be challenged with leading the entire process of firebuilding, from spark to success!
