Classes that will be taught during Songwriters Mini Camp:

Music Theory with Julie Gibbs

“Why are some chord progressions commonly used in popular music?” “How do I write harmony over a melody?” “What is a major 7th chord and how do I form one?” These are all questions that will be answered in the Music Theory class! Learn the basics of music composition, as well as the origins of Western music in this interactive class. Bring a notebook, pencil, and enthusiasm!

About the instructor: Julie Gibbs holds a Bachelor’s degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music, with Master’s level coursework in Music Therapy from Nazareth College. Julie is an active performer and composer with the stage name Felix Goldstein (FelixGoldsteinIsAwesome.com), with proficiency on piano, electric bass, guitar, ukulele, saxophone, and bassoon. Her former ska band HaSkaLA performed at Warped Tour in 2010, and she participated in KlezKanada, a weeklong Klezmer workshop in Quebec. Julie is excited to teach her first class with Girls Rock! Rochester.

Songwriting with Katie Morey

How do I effectively write a song? What are the tools I can use to write a song? At the end of the week, students will have a completed song.

About the instructor: Katie Morey is an established Rochester singer-songwriter of 10+ years. She has released eight albums of original music and collaborated on countless others. She is a music teacher and cofounder of the Submarine School of Music.

Slam Poetry for Everyone! With Katherine Rucker

Slam poetry started as a way to bring poetry to the modern age. Instead of being rigid and full of rules, slam poetry is all about rhythm, stage presence, and writing your experience. It’s influenced by hip-hop and spoken word, and many slam poets focus on social justice, political, and personal issues in their work. Even if you don’t consider yourself a poet, slam poetry is a great way to find your rhythm, speak your truth, and get more comfortable in front of a crowd. We’ll talk about what slam poetry is and where it came from, including musical influences. We’ll also watch some performances from today’s greatest slam poets, speaking about a variety of modern issues and life experiences. Students will also get a chance to write their own poems, and on the last day, we’ll have our own mini poetry slam to show off what we learned and get inspired!
