Paleontology at the End of the Rope
January 19, 2022 | 7pm
Speaker: Dr. Penny Higgins
Natural Trap Cave (NTC) is a paleontologist's dream. Fossils on the floor of NTC have been a source of fascination and mystery since their first excavation in the 1970s. Today, the cave is only accessible by single-rope techniques, which means climbing in and out has to be done on a single, vertical rope. For NTC, this is about an 80 foot drop! In this talk, Higgins will discuss some challenges that researchers face while collecting fossils within NTC as well as some exciting discoveries that have been made there!
Speaker Bio
Penny is a vertebrate paleontologist and geochemist. Her scientific specialty is using the geochemical signatures preserved in fossil bones and teeth to better understand past climate, weather, and the behavior of now-extinct mammals. Penny is also a small business owner (PaleoPix) and takes in senior and hospice cats (Mew-Mew House). She lives in Williamson in a 185 year old house with two dogs, mumble-mumble cats, and her son.
