Middle School students in Penfield or the Penfield School District are invited to submit an essay regarding Memorial Day

The Town of Penfield is now accepting entries for its annual Memorial Day Essay Contest. The contest is open to all middle school (grades 6-8) students who currently attend a Penfield school, or who live in Penfield.

The topic that students are invited to write about this year is “The America I Believe In”. Cash prizes have been increased for 2017: $175 for First Place, $125 for Second Place, and $100 for Third Place. Prizes are sponsored by a generous donation from VFW Post 820. Essays are judged by a panel consisting of members of American Legion Braman Post 1229 and Penfield Rotary.

“This contest has historically brought out many fantastic young writers from Penfield,” said Penfield Town Supervisor Tony LaFountain. “It is a privilege to see the talent of these students showcased in such a meaningful way.”

The top three winning essays will be read by the authors at Penfield’s Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29.

Contest entries and submission form can be submitted to the Town of Penfield at the following address: Memorial Day Essay Contest, c/o Penfield Recreation, 1985 Baird Road, Penfield, NY 14526. Entry deadline is Friday, May 12. All entries become the property of the Town of Penfield.
