*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/23/2019
(AFTERNOONS: for ages 14+) Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley in a competition with her husband and a friend to write the best horror story, is an early example of science fiction and, some have argued, the first true science fiction story. In this camp, we will use Frankenstein as a springboard to discuss the science fiction genre and to consider the consequences and controversies surrounding certain scientific advancements.

Through readings, discussion, activities, and writing exercises, the class will also contemplate the consequences of meddling with life and death, isolation and the desire to connect with others, and why humans (and even Creatures) crave love. It is not necessary to have read Frankenstein to participate in this camp.
