The musical is a clever combination of several of Arnold’s Fly Guy books including Hi! Fly Guy, Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl and Fly Guy vs. the Flyswatter. Arnold is a two-time winner of the ALA’s (American Library Association) Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor for Hi! Fly Guy and more recently, I Spy Fly Guy. Author and illustrator of over 60 books, Arnold’s first book ever, No Jumping on the Bed!, became an ILA-CBC (International Literacy Association-Children’s Book Council) Children's Choice book. Parts, another one of Arnold’s children’s stories, was named one of Parents Magazine’s 50 all-time best children's books.
Tedd Arnold is something of a local celebrity, currently residing in his birthplace of Elmira, New York. “We're hoping he'll make the two-hour drive to see our show – we’ve invited him to watch his characters come alive on our stage at TYKEs,” explains TYKEs’ director and founder Freyda Schneider. “The show is just as fun and exuberant as you’d expect from the Fly Guy series – with its lovable characters and energetic, clever plots. The lively, very fast-paced original score by Austin Zumbro is dazzling and so unique – kids and parents will be buzzing.”
In the show, Buzz and his pet fly embark on a madcap adventure from the school bus to a crazy flyswatter factory field trip to the much-awaited Amazing Pet Contest, accompanied by a host of hilarious characters including Roz the lunch lady, Fly Girl and her owner Liz, and even [spoiler-alert:] the Super Swatter 6000 robot-turned-waffle-maker.
Fly Guy: The Musical is recommended for children ages 4 and up. School-time shows sold out in a matter of days, so TYKEs encourages theatre-goers to purchase tickets early as they expect the shows to sell out quickly.
