The story of palace intrigue, romance, and betrayal has inspired countless movies, a play, and now Artistic Director David Palmer uses Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to bring the story to Rochester audiences.

In pre-Revolution Paris, the Marquise de Merteuil  seeks revenge against her ex-lover. So she plots the seduction of his virgin fiancée, Cécile.

The Marquise calls on Valmont to accomplish her plan. At first he declines,  he has his eye on Madame de Tourvel. But Tourvel proves too virtuous for Valmont. A friend of hers has warned her about Valmont.

When Valmont discovers the warning friend is Cécile’s mother, he agrees to the Marquise’s plan to seduce Cécile.

Meanwhile, in Paris, Cécile is falling in love with Danceny, her music teacher. They fall in love and the Marquise steps in to ruin their affair. The Marquise seduces Danceny and in his absence, Valmont takes advantage of Cecile.

Ashamed Cecile confides in the Marquise who tells Cecile, in a society so repressive and contemptuous of women, young women should take advantage of all the lovers they can acquire. The result: by day, Danceny courts Cécile, and each night she receives a sexual “lesson” from Valmont.

Despite all the extra-curricular distractions, Valmont manages to win Tourvel’s heart—but at a cost: the lifelong bachelor playboy falls in love. In a fit of jealousy, Merteuil mocks Valmont and threatens to trash his reputation as a carefree playboy.

Valmont responds by telling all to Danceny, the music tutor. Danceny challenges Valmont to a duel.

Come see Dangerous Liaisons, as a date night or fun event with friends, to learn how the twisted story ends and if Valmont and the Marquise find victory or punishment for their deceit.

This story focuses on adult themes and includes choreography suggesting sexual violence. RCB encourages parents to read about the story before deciding if this ballet is appropriate for their child.
