Ceramic & Glass Engineering

*The event has already taken place on this date: Thu, 07/02/2020
This is a great opportunity to learn about ceramic and glass engineering, to sample life on a college campus and to meet other campers with similar interests and academic ability. The emphasis is on having fun and enjoying our beautiful natural surroundings while learning!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

June 28 - July 2, 2020

Registration opens February 1, 2020

Cost of Camp: $930 Residential; $775 Commuters

We will be using CampDoc for our online registration system. We are again partnering with CampDoc (an online registration program) to better serve our campers and staff. CampDoc offers online registration and an electronic health record system for campers. The CampDoc site is secure, encrypted and password protected. Only Alfred University Summer Health Staff will have access to camper health information.

The Program:
This is a great opportunity to learn about ceramic and glass engineering, to sample life on a college campus and to meet other campers with similar interests and academic ability. The emphasis is on having fun and enjoying our beautiful natural surroundings while learning!

Campers participate in exciting hands-on lab experiences in ceramic processing & tape casting, and glass melting & press forming, working alongside faculty.

With our dynamic, engaging, talented and caring faculty and staff; terrific facilities; and lovely campus, the AU Ceramic & Glass Engineering camp could make this your best summer ever!

Please note: We also offer a camp in Drone/Robotics.

Who Can Attend?
This co-ed, overnight summer camp is designed for high school students who are entering their freshman through senior years. The number of participants is kept small to allow for individualized attention and optimal use of equipment.

Faculty:
Classes are taught by distinguished faculty of Alfred University's Inamori School of Engineering and by advanced AU graduate students. Dr. William Carty, Professor and Chair of Ceramic Engineering, Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University is the director of this program.

Ceramic Processing and Tape Casting:
Ceramic components are at the heart of a vast majority of our everyday items, from cell phones to toilets. At the center of the manufacturing process is ceramic processing - using powders to make usable items. This summer lab exercise will focus on making a ceramic “sun-catcher” that will be fabricated using tape casting, lamination, and glazing, capturing aspects of both historical and advanced ceramic materials and processing techniques. We will discuss the chemistry involved, the reactions that occur at both room temperature and at high temperature, and how these processes affect the properties (light transmission, strength, etc.) of the ceramic component. The students will:

  • Learn about powders and powder processing.
  • Learn to tape cast ceramic materials.
  • Color the ceramic tapes with ceramic colorants.
  • Cut and laminate the tapes to create a "sun-catcher"
  • Fire the samples to create a strong, translucent piece.

Glass Melting and Press Forming:
Glass is everywhere in our daily lives, from the screen on your cell phone and LCD television, to windows, bottles, and fiber optic cables. Unlike other ceramics and materials, glass is not a solid, but a super-cooled liquid. How glass is made, however, is an exciting and visually spectacular event, where raw materials (sand, limestone, and soda ash) are blended and melted at high temperature to form a viscous liquid that can be cast and shaped into objects. This lab exercise will discuss how chemistry affects glass properties and color, making glass, and stress in glass due to cooling. In addition, each student will cast a glass piece to take home! The students will:

  • Learn about glass chemistry and raw materials.
  • Learn to batch glass and mix raw materials.
  • Melt the glass in crucibles in a furnace.
  • Pour the molten glass into "pucks".
  • Press mold these glass pucks into the final form.

Schedule:
Campers arrive between 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Sunday for registration and check-in and they check-out after lunch on Thursday. Campers attend classes/labs during the day and have lots of fun participating in planned recreational activities on and off campus each evening. Living, dining and learning together, they have ample opportunity to get to know each other well and develop lasting friendships. Further information, including a detailed program schedule and driving directions to campus, will be sent to all campers upon acceptance.

Tuition, Room and Board:
$930 ($775 for commuters) - $100.00 deposit required

This covers tuition, supervision, materials, take-home projects, room and board from dinner on the first day through lunch on the last day, and recreational activities. The deposit must be submitted with the application (deadline May 1). Remaining balance is due by June 1.

How to Apply:
Students who wish to apply must submit:

  • A completed online registration form (We support the current and previous major releases of Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari on a rolling basis.)
  • $100 deposit (paid via online application form)
  • A one-page essay telling us why you would like to attend (in your own words and signed)
