The Alden’s “Celebrating Indian Festivals” Series
As part of The Alden’s Summer Concert series in 2022, we will be presenting Garba360, a South Asian social dance experience with live music. An essential component of the nine-day, fall Hindu festival Navratri, Garba is an intoxicating, high-energy folk dance style from the Indian state of Gujarat. This community event has been reimagined for all to participate in the fun any time of the year!

Leading up to this event, The Alden will provide virtual workshops to give context to this celebration and the culture that surrounds it. Because each Indian state has its own cultural traditions, it is impossible to take a “deep dive” into the culture of the whole country in just a few workshops, so we will be exploring some of the ways people from Gujarat mark the transition
of seasons.

These workshops are designed for families from all backgrounds to participate in together. We will all learn something, but because these workshops are celebratory events, they can be enjoyed by those who already have family traditions marking these events or those who have never participated in one of these events before. All workshop leaders are of Gujarati heritage and will share their culture with us from their own perspective.

Celebrate Garba (Sharad Navratri) Workshop (Virtual)
Friday, Sept. 17, 6 p.m.
$7/$5 MCC district residents (fee is per device)

When people in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat want to celebrate, the ecstatic dance, traditionally known as Garba, often provides the fuel. An essential component of wedding celebrations and of the nine-day, fall Hindu festival Navratri, Garba refers to both a style of Indian folk dance as well as the event at which the dance is performed. The dance is an intoxicating, high-energy dance style marked by handclaps and twirls.

In advance of Navratri, join us to learn more about the dance and practice the steps. Feel free to wear a long, flared skirt, kurta top or other Indian clothing.
