The origin of the phrase "bushcraft" comes from skills used in the bush country of Australia. Bushcraft skills include firecraft, tracking, hunting, fishing, shelter-building, navigation by natural means, the use of tools such as knives and axes, foraging, water sourcing, hand-carving wood, container construction from natural materials, and rope and twine-making, among others. Join us and learn these skills!
With a steady breath you bring your bundle of bark and grasses to life. Born from a self-crafted kit, the flame you created grows larger as you feed it bits of dry goldenrod, bark, and twigs -- gifts from the landscape unlocked through wisdom not yet lost to time.
The Cumming Nature Center will offer a workshop all about fire by friction, Participants will discover the basics of fire, learn what materials to use from the landscape, and construct their own bow drill kit. This hands-on workshop is designed for young people and adults ages 14 and older who will be comfortable using carving tools. Alex Szuba, experienced primitive skills and Forest School educator, is leading this Fire Series. 15 slots available. Come learn a timeless skill that can be used in a survival situation, or to pass on to your family next time you go camping.
Appropriate for: young people and adults ages 14 and older who will be comfortable using carving tools.
