What DOESN'T work to improve gas mileage
With the high price of gas these days, most people are looking for legitimate ways to boost their gas mileage. Sadly, much of the advice and tips out there in the marketplace are simply scams.
Before spending additional money to improve your miles per gallon, read these myths:
- Premium gas does not increase your MPGs (miles per gallon used). If your car is not a high-performance model that requires premium gasoline, using regular is less expensive and will have the same results.
- Gas-saving devices like the Fuel Genie and the Fuel Doctor claim they boost gas mileage. “None of these work,” declares Mike Quincy of Consumer Reports.
- Gas additives may help keep your car’s fuel injector clean, thus making the car run more efficiently – but, overall, these additives are unsuccessful at improving gas mileage more than the tiniest bit.
- Air filters being replaced in an older car improves gas mileage some. However, new cars automatically adjust the air-to-fuel ratio, which affects performance quite a bit.
- Air conditioning is a must for most drivers in the hot summer months. Yes, using your A/C will make the engine work a little harder, but so does having the windows open due to the effect on the car’s aerodynamic drag. “Our recommendation is to do what you need to be comfortable,” Quincy says. “You’ll be more awake, alert and a better driver.”
