Shake on the Lake co-founder and producing artistic director, Josh Rice, is directing this year’s production of ‘The Tempest’. Mr. Rice is a Silver Lake native who graduated from Perry High School before starting a career in theatre arts.
He has an MFA in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence College and most recently finished Artist in Residency programs in Iceland, Maine, and Alaska, as well as performing as a puppeteer with the NY Philharmonic Orchestra in Stravinsky's Petrushka at the Barbican Theatre in London
Mr. Rice is a 2014 Creative Community Fellow with National Arts Strategies for his puppetry program with seniors living with Alzheimer's and Dementia, The Mnemonic Theatre Project. In August, Josh will travel to Japan to study traditional kuruma ningyo puppetry with 5th-generation puppet master and Japanese National Treasure, Koryu Nishikawa V, as part of the TCG Andrew W. Mellon In the Lab Grant.
This season is the fourth consecutive year for the festival. For the first time, the festival was a New York State Regional Economic Development Council Grant awardee. The grant supports the festival’s growth to new venues in Wyoming and Livingston Counties. The Arts Council for Wyoming County and Livingston Arts are both partners with the festival this year.
The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s fantasy plays featuring magic, the titular storm, a shipwreck, and the resulting adventures on this remote island, told through SOTL's signature physical style and elements of puppetry. Mr. Rice said "The Tempest is one of my favorite Shakespearean plays. It has elements of comedy and tragedy, but also romance and magic that make this story of revenge and redemption so beautiful and fun."
Shake on the Lake also hosts a week-long theatre residency at YMCA Camp Hough, and community educational events including actor talks and performances at the Perry Farmers’ Market.
Performances of the ‘The Tempest’ begin in Geneseo (Wadsworth Homestead) on July 30 at 6:30 p.m. and continue to Letchworth State Park (Highbank Recreation Area) on July 31 at 6:30 p.m.; Attica (Attica Historical Society) on August 1 at 6:30 p.m.; Mt. Morris (Livingston Arts Center) on August 2 at 2:00 p.m.; Arcade (Village of Arcade Park) on August 4 at 6:30 p.m. The main stage performances at Silver Lake on the Perry Public Beach (42 Walker Road, Perry) are Thursday August 6, Friday August 7, and Saturday August 8 at 6:30 p.m. and a matinee Saturday August 8 at 2:00 p.m. There are alternate locations for each performance in case of inclement weather. The Attica, Arcade, and Letchworth State Park performances are free. Tickets for all other venues are $10.
