Nineteenth-century families needed to start early if they were going to be ready for the holidays.
There were candles to be made, root cellars to be filled and meats to be processed. Most of the family pitched in to create the decorations that would bedeck their homes. Finally came many hours of cooking and baking.
It was a special family time.
Share in that age-old experience on Saturday, Nov. 24, as Genesee Country Village & Museum presentsPreparing for the Holidays the 19th-Century Way.
There will be tastings; soap making; sausage stuffing; smoking meats and other meat preserving; rail splitting; chestnut roasting; story readings; chocolate and blackpowder demonstrations; wool spinning and clothes making; and other activities.
And a holiday meal wouldn't be complete without a hog. Watch as expert carvers butcher the meat and learn about where food really comes from!
New this season is children's Breakfast with St. Nicholas. Take a picture with an authentic 19th century Saint Nick - and share a hot meal with him on this brisk morning. Additional fees apply.
A Christmas Crafts program —held throughout the historic village—will include traditional holiday crafts of the time period. In the 19th century, nothing said, “You’re special,” better than a personally made item. This is just as true today as it was more than 100 years ago. Even if you are the special person you’re crafting it for. Families looking to share that personal experience have the opportunity to continue that tradition at Genesee Country Village & Museum this season. Try your hand at making 5 different crafts and ornaments ($4 each or all 5 for $15).
At the same time, visitors can shop at the Flint Hill Gift Shop for extra savings during the After-Thanksgiving Sale.
