Penfield Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of its 62nd Season, “Old World – New World,” will take place on October 23rd, 2017, at 7:30PM, featuring works by Hindemith, Premru, and Dvořák.

In the orchestral suite Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, Hindemith pays homage to an important German early Romantic composer. Extracts from Weber’s works serve as themes which are transformed through each movement. In the process, Hindemith has created a splashy - sometimes jazzy - colorful orchestral piece that American audiences love. This is followed by the Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, written in 1956 by Raymond Premru (1934-98), an Eastman graduate and former professor of trombone at Oberlin.  Premru famously played trombone on the legendary Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.  We are privileged to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s former Principal Trombonist Mark Kellogg to bring to our audience this unique and rarely performed work.

Symphony No. 9 in E minor, From The New World by Antonín Dvořák is a perennial audience favorite with its syncopated rhythms and modal melodies that are reminiscent of folk and popular musical traditions from Bohemia and the United States.  It includes the quintessential English horn solo “Going Home”.

The performance will be held at Penfield High School Auditorium, 25 High School Drive, Penfield, NY 14526. Tickets can be ordered online at  www.penfieldsymphony.org or reserved by phone at 585-872-0774. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens and are available at all area Wegmans, at the Penfield Recreation Department (1985 Baird Road), at Canandaigua National Bank—Penfield Branch (1816 Penfield Road), and at the door on the night of the concert.  Students of any age with student ID may attend the concert free, so this is an ideal opportunity to bring the family along for an evening of classical entertainment.

“Penfield Symphony concerts
have a very family friendly atmosphere. It is especially nice because we see so many people we know. But, most important is the music. The orchestra is very, very good and it is wonderful having such great music right here in Penfield." - Sharon Nazarian

"The concert was a spectacular holiday treat. I was proud to be a Penfield resident and thrilled that the Penfield High School Chorale students had the opportunity to sing with professionals! How wonderful that so many talented musicians volunteer their time to provide this high-level music experience right here in our community!" - Camille Rutan

“Thank you for another wonderful season for local residents. I am so grateful to David Harman and all the musicians who play with such joy and enthusiasm. The programming offers variety including classic and contemporary with surprises now and then. Thank you to everyone who makes all this happen." - Jean Cheney
