Every four years, the world’s athletes gather in a spirit of friendship, respect, and good will to challenge themselves to excellence. Live your passion or Viva sua paixão is the motto for the XXXI Olympiad to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this coming August.

Local Olympian Iris Zimmermann knows first-hand the passion of athletes whose lives are consumed with training, sweat, discipline and determination.   Iris and her sister Felicia were members of the 2000 US Women’s foil team and competed in the sport of fencing at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Join Iris and staff from the Rochester Fencing Club to learn about the origins of fencing, its role in the creation of the modern Olympics, and the fundamentals of the sport in a dynamic PowerPoint presentation with hands-on fencing experience.  Learn about the gear and three types of swords as Iris suits up and demonstrates live.  Stand up, take up a (foam) sword and learn the basics. Do you have what it takes to be a fencer?  Challenge your friends to join you.

Participants should wear sneakers and a short-sleeved t-shirt.

No crocs, flip-flops or sandals, please.  Water bottle suggested.

Registration is required and begins June 15.
