If you and your family would like to celebrate the Martin Luther King Day holiday by commemorating Dr. King's legacy, please consider attending one of these Rochester-area events. Canandaigua

Speeches from Kids: *Extra-kid-friendly event! From 12pm-1pm, the First Congregational Church will host a selection dramatic readings from the Canandaigua Academy Drama Department, and the CA Jazz Band will provide music. Winners of the 2012 MLK Elementary School Poster and 8th Grade Essay Contest will be recognized with the winning posters on display. Following the celebration, there will be a light lunch served in the dining room. This event is sponsored by the City of Canandaigua, the MLK Planning Committee, and the First Congregational Church.

Brighton

Friday, January 13, 7:30pm, MLK Commemoration: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 7:30pm at Temple B'rith Kodesh featuring Rev. Harvey of Mt. Olivet Church with a Shabbat Service/Jazz Shabbat featuring Keri and Jason Berger, and the TBK Adult Choir.

Black Storytelling League stories: *Extra-kid-friendly event! Members of the Black Storytelling League of Rochester pass on stories of history, heritage, and culture in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at 10:30am at the Brighton Public Library.

Rochester

Saturday, January 14, 2012: The 28th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Gospel Songfest from Colgate Divinity School, at Mt. Olivet. A musical celebration of the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sponsored by the Black Student Caucus and Program of Black Church Studies at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. 6 pm Saturday Jan 14 at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Church services with special MLK speaker: Services at 8:30, 10, and 11am, at the Asbury First United Methodist Churchled by Rev. Dr. Albert Paul Brinson, a college and childhood friend of Martin Luther King.

Mt. Olivet Baptist Church hosts guest speaker is Rabbi Laurence Kotok of Temple B'rith Kodesh at 10:45 a.m.

Sunday, January 15 concert: The classically trained contralto Juanita Wallace Jackson presents "Honoring the Legacy," a performance of music, narration and poetry at 3 p.m. at the Asbury First United Methodist Church. $10; $5 seniors and students.

Sunday, January 15: The First Community Interfaith Institute will host their annual Dr. Martin Luther King program at 4pm, at 219 Hamilton Street in Rochester.

Free Dance Class at Garth Fagan Dance School! *Extra-kid-friendly event! Kids can celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. with a FREE Garth Fagan MLK Dance class at the Garth Fagan Dance School at 50 Chestnut Street in Rochester. Classes for ages 5-7 run from 10 to 11 a.m.; Ages 8-12, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; Beginning Level classes (for ages 13 and older) run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Intermediate Level (for ages 13 and older) run from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m.; Classes for ages over 30 run 3 to 4:15 p.m. Please pre-register as classes fill up quickly.

Toddler Book Club celebrating MLK: *Extra-kid-friendly event! at the National Museum of Play at The Strong. Honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with story readings at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. designed to teach little ones about this famous civil rights leader. 19th Ward Annual Luminary Lighting: *Extra-kid-friendly event! The 19th Ward neighborhood will host their annual celebration with luminaries lighting the streets throughout the neighborhood. There will be hot chocolate stands, bonfire and activities from 6pm to 9pm

Rochester RazorSharks basketball game with MLK Commemoration: *Extra-kid-friendly event! Rochester RazorSharks Basketball at the Blue Cross Arena: Tip-off is at 2:05pm; the game will feature Carlton Wilcox Live, a local gospel group, that will sing the National Anthem and perform a tribute to Dr. King at halftime. Rochester Lancers Indoor Soccer MLK Tribute Game: *Extra-kid-friendly event! Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute game: Rochester Lancers vs. Milwaukee Wave. Events include live band and an interactive kids zone (with bounce houses, balloon animals and face painting). Special MLK tribute and ceremonial first kick before the game. 7 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial. $10 to $15; free to ages 12 and younger.

Event on Tuesday, January 17, 2012: I Have a Dream Speech: Have you ever heard the Martin Luther King, Jr. speech, "I Have a Dream"? All ages are welcome to come and feel the power and inspiration of King's words as spoken live during the 1963 March on Washington.Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Arnett Branch of the Rochester Public Library.

Pittsford

Speaker Rev. Harvey Clemons St. John Fisher College hosts keynote speaker Rev. Harvey Clemons Jr. and also includes a dance performance, poetry readings and a scholarship presentation. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cleary Auditorium in Kearney Hall.

Almeta Whitis, renowned storyteller: *Extra-kid-friendly event! Being the Dream Carriers: A Dr. Martin Luther King Day Celebration with master storyteller Almeta Whitis. 2 p.m. Pittsford Community Library, 24 State St., Pittsford. (585) 248-6275. Click here for more information.

Penfield

The Penfield Public Library will provide materials and directions to make no-sew fleece pillows, which will be donated to The Society for the Protection and Care of Children. For those in grades 6-12. 3 to 4 p.m. Registration required.

Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Penfield Public Library will host a community-wide discussion around the theme of "Penfield's Recollections of the Civil Rights Era" from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees will watch a short film on Martin Luther King, Jr. and then share their recollections of Dr. King and what effect the Civil Rights Movement had on them. Registration required.

Henrietta

RIT: Expressions of King's Legacy: As part of RIT's Expressions of King's Legacy events, on January 23rd RIT will host keynote speaker is Cornel West There will a poetry reading by Joshua Bennett and a performance by Garth Fagan Dance. Noon to 2 p.m. in the Gordon Field House. Registration is required.
