TYKEs is among the first theaters in the nation to mount a production of Madagascar: A Musical Adventure, which closely follows the plot of the first Madagascar movie, with an upbeat score including the hit song “I Like to Move It, Move It.”
Tickets cost $16, JCC members pay $15. Group and subscriber discounts are available. Call 585-461-2000 or order on-line at www.TykesTheatre.org.
TYKEs’ cast of all-local adult professional actors is directed by Michael Krickmire and music director Jim Schmitt. In the show, Alex the lion (played by Matt Wegman) is the king of the urban jungle and the main attraction at New York’s Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends – Melman the giraffe (played on stilts by long-time TYKEs actor Matt Mayne), Marty the zebra (played by Reuben Tapp), and Gloria the hippo (played by Jenna Owens) – have spent their whole lives well-fed and in blissful captivity before an admiring public. Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and decides to make his escape from the zoo – with the help of some prodigious penguins – to explore the world.
“Madagascar is one of TYKEs’ biggest shows – everything about it is huge and colorful,” explains TYKEs’ director and founder Freyda Schneider. “The show bursts with boundless energy and exuberance, with our cast of 11 actors playing a host of crazy, outlandish characters that families have come to love from the movie. TYKEs’ shows are of course designed for kids, but Madagascar has no shortage of clever interjections that adults will find hilarious. With virtually non-stop dancing, singing and comedy, this really is a show that will appeal to every single member of your family. And the sets, painted by TYKEs’ artist David Daniels, are out of this world!”
The show’s script is written by Kevin Aguila, the Emmy Award-winning writer of the animated PBS show “Peg + Cat,” who also wrote the hit Off-Broadway musical Alter Boyz (New York Outer Critics Circle Award, Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Award nominations). Original music for the show was created by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, the production and writing team known as Jillipop, a children’s entertainment production company that developed music for “Dora the Explorer” and “Go Diego Go,” as well as many other projects for Nickelodeon.
Madagascar is recommended for children ages three and up. School-time shows sold out in a matter of days, so TYKEs encourages theatre-goers to purchase tickets early as they expect the weekend shows to sell out quickly.
Madagascar is the final show of TYKEs’ 14th season and is sponsored by Wegmans.
TYKEs consistently ranks as the #1 Children’s Theatre Company in Rochester by KidsOutandAbout.com, and one of the top places in all of Rochester to bring kids. TYKEs also received the Family Favorite award for Best Children’s Theatre Performances by Rochester & Genesee Valley Parent Magazine (now ROC Parent).
