“Let’s Dance to Celebrate the Differences” – A community dance project to inspire and invigorate a community.

Bridging the gap between collegiate dance and community dance, the Brockport chapter of National Dance Educators Organization (NDEO) has teamed up with Cobblestone Arts Center for a series of dance master classes to get the community excited about dance movement.  For the entire month of March, FREE dance classes will be offered to children and adults at Best Foot Forward and taught by dance students and faculty from SUNY Brockport.  Each week will feature different course options including Irish Dance, Musical Theatre, Creative Dance, Yoga and Native American Dance.   These classes will be hosted once a week over the course of the month with a final performance at Cobblestone Arts Center’s newly renovated theatre on April 8th at 2pm.  The performance will feature excerpts from each weeks’ classes as well professional works presented by Brockport dancers.

Faculty advisor Juanita Suarez stresses the importance of dance extending outside of the collegiate environment and into the community.  Part of the inspiration for this month long engagement stems from the success Suarez had with “Happendance” a community and professional dance company that is located in E. Lansing, Michigan.

Brockport student Grace Lopata-Linn strongly advocates that “the power of dance is its ability to bring people together, this is what's so important about bringing dance into the community. Community dance isn't about your skill level or experience but making dance accessible for everyone.”

Globally, dance is an essential part of community culture.  SUNY Brockport’s Department of Dance invites all the local communities within and surrounding the Rochester area to participate in the passion and appreciation for life that dance can inspire.
