The Wonderful World of Disney in Rochester, On Ice

by Dresden Engle

While I’m one of those parents with an emblazed D on my chest because I’ve yet to take my 6-year-olds to Disney World, this week I’m off the hook and actually a hero.

Thank you, “Disney On Ice”!

What’s better than 60 Disney characters gliding and camel-ing before your eyes, ever-smiling and waving, in elaborate costume, lip-syncing to the Disney songs and scenes we know and love? In 2 hours of non-stop action, you experience most of the princesses and their princes on the rink all in one number, including the princess who started it all for Walt Disney in 1937—Snow White. (Absent were Princess Tiana, as the show has not yet been updated, as well as Princess Aurora, but she may be sleeping in a tower somewhere!)

Aladdin is joined by more than 20 dancing genies and Mulan has a full army joining her on the ice, as do Woody and Buzz with their marching army of little green men. Plus, “It’s a Small World” unfolds before your eyes at the end of Act I.

Ever wonder how many skaters are needed to operate a 12-foot shark from Finding Nemo or a 20-foot whale from Pinocchio? Yep, they’re there, too, gliding on the ice. And the cast is impressive; in fact, several have placed in the Olympics and have a variety of world-competition medals on their shelves!

It’s what you’d expect from Disney – full spectacle, a talented and happy cast, and, yes, some magic. Children were screaming like 'tweens at a Beiber concert and admittedly I don’t recall ever seeing my younger daughter so riveted and overjoyed just by the mere sight of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, and the rest. Add an illuminated 40-foot castle inside the arena and some fireworks (don’t worry, no loud noises) and you have “Disney On Ice.” Yes, this is the same show that was here three years back, but I enjoyed it just as much as the first time (and downtown Rochester is a heck of a lot closer than Orlando)!

You can experience “Disney On Ice: 100 Years of Magic” at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester though February 10, 2013. Learn more at http://disney.go.com/disneyonice/100yearsofmagic/index.html
