Greece Little League, Inc. History

Greece Little League, Inc. (GLL) is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation founded in 1954. As a charter member of Little League Baseball, Inc, headquartered in Williamsport PA, the league presently operates 12 different baseball and softball programs for youth, ages 4 to 18 that reside in the Town of Greece and Villages of Charlotte and Hilton. The league provides the participants and their families a positive and constructive activity that teaches self-esteem and sportsmanship in addition to the skills and rules. The league also operates a baseball program for mentally and physically challenged children called the Challenger Division. Challenger has been operated since 1992 and continues to grow in the County offering this worthwhile endeavor.

In recent years, the availability of suitablefields to operate the league has become very limited (click here), as the popularity of youth sports continues to grow, along with the population of Greece. At the present time GLL uses 13 fields in 5 different locations throughout the Town. Greece Little League owns only 6 fields, the Town of Greece owns 7 fields we use. In addition to the scheduling difficulties caused by the number of field locations, there are the added burdens the many families who have more than one child participating in the league (transportation, attendance).

In 1994, after completing a feasibility study and obtaining the appropriate approvals from the Town of Greece, GLL purchased 37 acres of undeveloped land. Construction of phase 1 included 5 regulation diamonds, an area for T-Ball and a parking lot. Play on the fields began in 1998. In 2001, a softball field was added and in 2003 we added an additional 90 foot field that at the end of 2012 will be converted to utilize it as a softball field, 50/70 field or 90' field. We are currently building our concession/restroom building which is in the center of the complex ear marked to open in the Spring of 2012.

Phase 1 of the project was completed with a lot of hard work, sweat and without the assistance of any Town funds at a total cost of $650,000. The expense for the softball field was nearly $60,000 and the cost for the 90 foot field was $120,000. We currently operate a small concession operation out of a maintenance building at the complex to pay for standard operating expenses.

Future plans include completion of our concession/restroom/storage building which to date has cost us over $250,000 (click here), 3 additional fields (1-90', 1- baseball 60', 1- softball 60') along with additional t-ball area and a full size parking lot off North Greece Rd.

The League is governed by a 17 member electedvolunteerBoard of Directors that meets monthly to plan, organize, implement and monitor ongoing operations. Numerous volunteers fill other important roles such as commissioner, umpires, field maintenance, fund raising, managers, coaches and special events.
