-Why was Angelina Jolie able to confidently predict that she would get cancer but so many others who have developed cancer never saw it coming? Why can doctors test patients’ genes to determine risk for diseases like Huntington’s disease, polycystic kidney disease, and cystic fibrosis but not for diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or bipolar disorder. Is obesity inherited? What about alcoholism or drug addiction? What is a gene anyway? Advancements in the field of genetics are making large contributions to medicine, and it is becoming increasingly important to have an understanding of genetics to make informed decisions about health care. Come learn about genetics and what we know about how it plays a role in disease. We’ll start with a discussion about what genes are and what they do. Then we’ll move on to learn about how changes in genes can cause disease. About the Teacher:Robin Williamson is a native Rochesterian who recently moved back to the area after being away for 16 years. She has a PhD in genetics, loves teaching to a variety of audiences, and has worked in academia as well as in management consulting. She is excited about the contributions genetics is making to medicine, but she is concerned that the information sometimes provided to the public can be incomplete and misleading.
