Ganondagan's Seneca Art & Cultural Center - Now Open

A visual review of Ganondagan's Seneca Art & Culture Center

by Debra Ross

Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor, NY has for many years been regarded as one of Western New York's most valued treasures. Generations of schoolkids and locals have learned about Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) history and culture there. Those interested in Native history and art have visited from far and wide. Scholars from many disciplines have used Ganondagan as a center for study.

But 2015 marks the opening of a new chapter for Ganondagan: Their beautiful new Seneca Art & Culture Center is open after 15 years of hard work and dedication by Ganondagan State Historic Site Manager, Peter Jemison, and many dozens of others who helped Mr. Jemison's vision become reality. So it's time to head back to Ganondagan to celebrate and learn.

Ganondagan is located at the corner of Routes 444 and Boughton Hill Road in Victor. The new Seneca Art & Culture Center is located at 7000 County Road 41 (Boughton Hill Road), down the hill from the main building on the corner.

Inside the Center, you'll be welcomed in the beautiful lobby.

You'll find an auditorium for performances and presentations, classrooms, and a movie room where you can see an introduction to the Center.

Then, what you really came for: The wonderful exhibit room filled with visual reproductions, artifacts, graphical and high-tech interactive displays, and more tributes to Haudenosaunee history, culture, and contemporary life:

Longhouse

From the back of the Center, there is easy access to the Bark Longhouse.

Should you visit with your kids?

The cost is low (see below) the value is high. Visit with your kids, not once, but many times.
