April in Rochester is finally a time for rebirth and new life in the plant and animal world. From Tuesday, April 3 through Friday, April 6, families are invited to come to Ganondagan State Historic Site for Spring Break activities with these themes, free with admission to the Seneca Art & Culture Center.

Themed activities relate both to the opening of Ganondagan’s new exhibit—Hodinöhsö:ni’ Women: From the Time of Creation—and the animals and plants that appear in the spring. The daily schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, April 3, “Creation Story” - at 11 am and 2 pm, mini Iroquois Social Dancing
workshop features the opportunity to learn and join in the Robin Dance, the Women’s Dance and the Duck Dance. A hands-on educational “touch table” also will be available. For all ages.
  • Wednesday, April 4, “Plants”  - at 11 am and 2 pm, listen to traditional stories about plants, then make sunflower seed bombs to take home and plant. For all ages.
  • Thursday, April 5, “Birds” - at 11 am, kids can make a feather pinwheel as seen in Ganondagan’s Three Sisters Garden; at 1 pm, go on a short bird walk on the Trail of Peace; at 2 pm, paint and assemble a gourd birdhouse to take home for a feathered friend.
  • Friday, April 6, “Trees” - Participants will learn about how tree bark was used by the
Haudenosaunee people. Harvested in the spring, it was used to make canoes, buckets, baskets, collect maple sap, and more. Kids will make their own felt “baskets” and see some real-life examples.

Seneca Art & Culture Center admission is: $6/adults; $3/seniors & students (12 years-college); $1/children 5-11; free/children four and younger and Friends of Ganondagan members.
