Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind, these subtle flecks of life are the source of all existence. Like tiny time capsules, they contain the songs, sustenance, memories, and medicines of entire cultures. They feed us, clothe us, and provide the raw materials for our everyday lives. In a very real sense, they are life itself.

The film unfolds to tell the importance of heirloom seeds to the agriculture of the world, focusing on global seed keepers and activists. Ninety-four percent of plant seed varieties were lost over the 20th century. The film introduces those working to save that remaining six percent. It presents the beauty of seeds, the battles growers have with giant corporations over control of seeds, and “seed-savers” who catalogue and preserve seeds.

"Seed" comes from the filmmakers behind "Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?" and the "Real Dirt on Farmer John." The film features Dr. Jane Goodall, Vandana Shiva, Winona LaDuke, and Andrew Kimbrell. More than a cautionary tale of “man against nature,” the remarkable film is an epic “good-versus-evil” saga playing out in our modern lives.

This is a unique opportunity in recognition of Earth Day to gain insight into traditional seed saving and food sovereignty.  The film begins at 1:30 pm. Join us for guided trail walks (11 am & 3 pm) and related art activities.
