Does the word “essay” make you cringe? Not all essays are 5-paragraph school assignments. In fact, the personal essay is quickly growing to be one of the most popular, engaging, and publishable forms of writing! Whether you have a political commentary you want to make, a thought or theme you find yourself revisiting again and again, or a story from your own history to celebrate or reflect on—an essay can be about anything! We’ll examine the elements of a successful personal essay by studying published examples to examine elements of craft: form, voice, image, the music of language, and scene vs. summary. Each writer will leave at the end of the week with a draft of several essays and many ideas to move forward with!
