RYCL Invites Students to Lift Their Voices and Make Change Happen

Rochester, NY, April 16, 2018 – The Rochester Youth Climate Leaders (RYCL) are Inviting students in grades 6-12 to learn how they can take steps to fight climate change on an individual and institutional level during their second annual Youth Climate Summit on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.

The Youth Climate Summit will bring together students and teachers from Rochester area schools and colleges to learn about the local impacts of climate change and how students can manage and mitigate their personal and their school’s impact on the planet. Through free, hands-on workshops and brainstorming sessions, students will leave the summit ready to make their schools more sustainable places to learn. Another outcome is connecting like-minded students with organizations within the community to advance sustainability advocacy.

Linden Burack, one of RYCL’s student organizers, adds, "I think adult action is important, but it is even more important for our generation to be knowledgeable and take responsibility for the world that we will inherit. I think one of the best ways to do that is forming youth and school based groups focused on the environment.”

Ms. Lisa Roy Baron, Founding Board Chair of Greentopia, will be the keynote speaker. Students will learn with local organizations like Dream Bikes, Citizen’s Climate Lobby, Flower City Pickers, and Impact Earth before creating their own plan for school-based and individual change.

Students (and their parents and teachers) can still register for the Youth Climate Summit through the RYCL website, www.rycl.org.

Rochester Youth Climate Leaders (RYCL) is a youth movement voicing concern for our climate and advocating for a sustainable future. Its members range from middle school students to students attending college as well as teachers and parents. RYCL was created following a 2015 summit hosted by The Harley School where youth leaders saw the opportunity to become advocates for change.
