During April school break, Ganondagan celebrates Mother Earth Week every dayby going to the birds! On April 14, 18, and 20 from 1:30-3 pm, “Extinction: The Story of the Passenger Pigeon” presents the history of the pigeon hunt in Warren, PA, followed by a felt bird ornament craft and a traditional Haudenosaunee Pigeon Dance workshop. On April 19 and 21 from 1:30-3 pm, Friends of Ganondagan hosts an educational program with Rochester’s Wild Wings organization with a live demonstration of raptors and birds of prey. Wild Wings houses and cares for permanently injured bids of prey unable to survive on their own in the wild. Guided trail walks are offered each day at 11 am and 3 pm. All programs this week are free with admission to the Seneca Art & Culture Center. “Celebrating Mother Earth Week” is sponsored in part by Davey Tree.

Mother Earth Week culminates with Earth Day events on Saturday, April 22:

  • From 9:30 am–noon, volunteers are invited to help the Environmental Field Team remove invasive species at the site. Those interested should wear appropriate clothes, bring a water bottle, and meet at the Environmental Field Office, the small red building at 1488 State Rte 444.
  • At 1:00 pm, there will be a special screening of the award-winning documentary Seed: The Untold Story, followed by guided trail walks and special art projects. The film unfolds to tell the importance of heirloom seeds to the agriculture of the world, focusing on global seed keepers and activists. Ninety-four percent of plant seed varieties were lost over the 20th century. The film introduces those working to save that remaining six percent. It presents the beauty of seeds, the battles growers have with giant corporations over control of seeds, and “seed-savers” who catalogue and preserve seeds. Tickets are $10/general public, purchase online at http://bit.ly/2nSYinQ. Friends of Ganondagan member tickets are $8, call 585-742-1690 to purchase.
  • From 1-3 pm, the Environmental field Team will teach about birds and their migration patterns as well as oversee a make-and-take pom-pom bird activity. Guided Trail Walks take place at 11 am and 3 pm.
