7:00 p.m. Open Mic

7:30 p.m. Poetry Slam

The Workshop, Open Mic, and Poetry Slam are free and open to any high school student ages 13-19.

A poetry slam is audience-judged, competition performance poetry. All poems are the original work of the performer and must be under three minutes in length. Poetry slams were created to make poetry more accessible and to break down barriers of class, race, and education, promoting community dialog.

A final selection of a Rochester Poetry Slam Team, drawn from poets participating in the monthly slams, will travel to and compete in the national poetry slam competition: Youth Speaks: Brave New Voices, in Atlanta, GA, in July, 2015. All expenses will be paid.

Leading this venture will be Rachel McKibbens, a legend within the poetry slam community, noted for her accomplishments both on and off the stage. She is a nine-time National Poetry Slam team members, as appeared on eight NPS final stages, coached the New York louderARTS poetry slam team to three consecutive final stage appearances, is the 2009 Women of the World Poetry Slam champion, and the 2011 National Underground Poetry Sam individual champion.

Rachel McKibbens, along with other slam poets drawn from local colleges, are available to visit schools to make a free presentation on slam poetry.
