Society for Chamber Music in Rochester’s (SCMR) continues its 40th anniversary celebration with Bach to the Future, which is sponsored by the Abkowitz family and features Baroque music and a wine tasting. In addition, audience members will enjoy an inside look at the repertoire with a pre-concert talk by Artistic Directors and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Musicians Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr.
Athayde and Behr explain, “this concert features the music of J.S. Bach, but with a twist. Musicians will perform Bach’s music as arranged by other great composers, such as Mozart and Rachmaninoff.” The concert also includes Sitkovetsky’s arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for string trio featuring Athayde, Marc Anderson and Benjamin Krug. For Athayde and Behr, “hearing this piano work performed as a string trio brings a whole new level of appreciation for this masterwork.” For Bach’s early works, Mendelssohn was one of the first composers to promote Bach’s genius and Shannon Nance will perform a collection of these works that clearly show Bach’s compositional influence. Bach’s style is re-imagined in the twentieth century as SCMR concludes the program with the fun and pleasurable Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio by Claude Bolling performed by Rebecca Gilbert, Chiao-Wen Cheng, Jeff Campbell, and Dave Mancini.
SCMR is pleased to resume the complimentary wine tastings sponsored by Pinnacle Wine and Liqour at intermission. The pre-concert talk is at 3:30pm and the performance begins at 4:00pm.
