AUDITIONS for THE ORPHANS CHRISTMAS STAR
an original all-girls holiday musical production
About the show …
Set in 1930’s Chicago, The Orphans Christmas Star tells the story of a young woman whose dream to become a Hollywood Star is transformed when she becomes the teacher for a girls orphanage in Depression-era America. Traditional Christmas songs and an original book and score by Cara D’Emanuele bring this heart-warming family musical to audiences in this debut performance.
About the auditions …
All girls in grades 2 – 12, regardless of experience, are welcome and encouraged to audition!
Audition Dates and Times: Sunday September 13 and Monday September 14, 6 – 8:30 pm
(Attend one of the two audition dates. This is an open call. No appointment necessary.)
Callbacks: Wednesday September 16, 6 – 8:30 pm
(Actors will be notified by email on Tuesday September 15 if they are required to attend the callback session.)

What to prepare for/bring to the auditions …
Girls in grades 2 – 5 should prepare 1 short Christmas poem and 1 short Christmas carol;
Girls in grades 6 – 12 should prepare 1 short monologue and 1 Christmas carol or song from a Broadway musical. Girls should bring a headshot (candid or school photo is fine) and resume (if you have one but no worries if you don’t!).
About the roles …
There are roles for 25 girls per cast. The 12 performances will be shared between 3 casts for a total company of 75 girls! 9 “Adult roles”: Vivian (Teacher/lead/strong singer), Evelyn English (Hollywood Starlet/strong singer), Eleanor (Vivian’s Grandmother), Maxine (The Piano Teacher), Eunice (Director of The Orphanage), Pauline (The Cook), Vera (Librarian/strong solo singer), Maud (Spinster Sister), Hattie (Spinster Sister). 16 “girls roles” playing the orphans: Lily, Daisy, Rose, Violet (The 4 “flower” sisters/strong harmony singers), Kathryn (the oldest orphan), Minnie (loves to spend time with Pauline in the kitchen), Ruby (wants to be like Shirley Temple/tap solo), Pearl (“spoiled” and used to luxuries), Grace (writer/wants to be a journalist), Fannie (the “book worm”), Beatrice (youngest orphan/adorable), Addie Mae (the “trouble maker”), Esther (the “singer”/strong singer), Frances (the “tom boy”), Irene (intelligent/wants to be a doctor), Ruth (very shy). All girls sing in the ensemble vocal numbers. All girls will not be required to sing solo.
About the rehearsals …
Rehearsals will be held on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday nights from 6 – 8:30 pm at The Discovery Charter School, 133 Hoover Drive, Rochester, New York. All girls will not be called for every rehearsal. A reasonable amount of conflicts will be accepted. Rehearsals begin on Sunday September 20. Mandatory dress rehearsals will be held from 5 – 9 pm Monday – Thursday November 30 – December 3, 2015.
About the performances …
12 performances will be shared between 3 casts (Cast A, B, C) Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 10 am, 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sundays at 10 am and 2 pm December 4 – 13, 2015 at The Discovery Charter School, 133 Hoover Drive, Rochester, New York.
The production fee …
The production fee for participation in the December 2015 production of The Orphans Christmas Star is $300 per girl. Unless otherwise arranged, the participation fee is due at the first rehearsal/parent orientation on Sunday September 20, 2015.
