Now well into its second century, Allendale Columbia is a leading independent, diverse, co-ed school that prepares students in nursery through grade 12 for the world they will inherit. Here, learning goes far beyond books and tests. We have the freedom to dig deeper so students can question more, discuss, debate, and question again. As a result, our students develop critical thinking skills and become effective problem solvers. Our faculty members use their independence and experience to connect knowledge to real life so students can make more sense of the world— and their place in it. It all adds up to a different school of thought: high expectations and relevant experiences that prepare students to succeed in a global community.

Pre-Primary Program (Nursery & Pre-K) We provide our Pre-Primary students with a foundational school experience that develops young minds and bodies by teaching a complete range of academic, physical, and personal skills while emphasizing FUN.

Our lively and fun Pre-Primary classes blend foundational math, reading, science, social studies, and foreign language studies into exciting, fast-moving days led by our outstanding faculty. We use proven, research-based curricula and gauge student progress with formal and informal assessments, ensuring that each student is ready to advance to Lower School.

The Lower School curriculum, designed for students in grades Kindergarten through five, provides a strong foundation in the skills necessary for a successful academic career. It also offers the opportunity for students to discover their strengths as learners, and have fun doing it, which fosters a life-long love of learning. All Lower School students are assigned to a homeroom, where they receive instruction in language arts (reading, writing, public speaking, spelling, and grammar), math, and social studies. Additionally, they see specialists several times during a six-day cycle to enrich their learning. Special classes include world languages, library, music, technology, art, physical education, and S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Middle School educational programming is challenging, enriching, and flexible. It is designed to meet the needs of young adolescents in grades 6 - 8 while teaching independent learning skills and emphasizing critical thinking. Middle School students take on more responsibility for their learning by choosing electives to complete their schedules. We strive to offer every Middle School student a rewarding and intellectually stimulating experience that encourages intelligent decision making, self exploration, and social interaction with peers and adults.

The Upper School program, grades 9 - 12, combines a vigorous liberal arts and sciences education with college advising and a wide selection of extracurricular activities. Students become strong, independent learners, outstanding communicators and well-informed young adults ready to make the next step to higher education. Individualized course scheduling, top quality arts programming and a full selection of sports and activities give Upper School students countless opportunities to develop goals and deepen their passions. Our in-depth College Advising program helps make the ultimate transition to the next phase of our Upper School students’ education smooth and successful.
