“Timepiece Tales:” Exhibit and Program

“Timepiece Tales,” the new exhibit at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.), features clocks of various types and sizes from the extensive collection of The Reverend Garth Brokaw, former President and CEO of the Fairport Baptist Homes. The timepieces on display are representative of the 150 he has accumulated over the past 45 years. This free exhibit runs through December 23. At the time of the Revolutionary War, and for the next forty years, having a clock in one’s home was a luxury. Following the Civil War, clock building in the United States became one of the major industries, centered mostly in Connecticut, and lasted until about 1929. Those on display represent a time-period from 1780 until 1929 after which time clocks became more and more electrified. Folks who collect clocks do so for various reasons. Some are interested in the mechanics of the movements. Others find different case configurations to be of interest. Still others are fascinated with time itself: how we keep time, why we keep time, what is time? Is it a natural or human made construct? How does time impact daily living? Brokaw’s collection began with his inheritance of several family clocks. Not being at all mechanical, his appreciation is in the artistry of the cases that house the workings of the clocks. His continued fascination is how the progression of clock making relates to American history. This collection has been put together as an attempt to represent the progression of style and form over the course of 150 years as it relates to the progression of form and style in other aspects of American life, such as clothing and architecture. The clocks tell a story, and the story is critically important to the fabric of who we are as family, community, and nation. On Sunday, November 26th, from 2:30 - 3:30 pm, and in conjunction with the “Timepiece Tales” exhibit, Brokaw will use the display and a few additional items to unwind the story of clock making in the United States. All are welcome to attend this free program - and to place bids on the Yuletide Traditions Silent Auction items, the annual fundraiser to support the Fairport Historical Society and Museum’s educational programs for youths and adults, exhibits, and artifact acquisitions!
